Studio You Live Broadcast Event: Changing the way girls see PE

A few weeks ago, on 1st May, we coordinated the very first live broadcast event for Studio You, our educational platform with a mission to make sure every girl, regardless of background or ability, can enjoy PE.

Filmed at Mulberry Academy in Shoreditch and hosted by BBC Radio 1Xtra presenter Swarzy, the event focused on how to get active in a way that feels fun and empowering, featuring expert advice and personal stories from panellists including Nike Instructor Tia Denton, This Girl Can Campaign Manager Dani Ward, NHS doctor and content creator Dr Frankie Jackson-Spence, and ambassadors from Women in Sport.

Filmed in front of a studio audience of students in years 7-11, it was also livestreamed to schools across the country to help as many girls as possible feel part of the conversation.

Why did we do it?

Physical activity has a positive impact on girls' mental wellbeing, learning, and engagement in school, as well as their physical health. However, insight shows that girls are less likely to be active than boys. We also know that girls feel less confident than boys when exercising or playing sport and feel less knowledgeable about getting involved with different types of activities.*

With this in mind, the Studio You live event focused on creating a space to discuss the barriers that may hold girls back from getting active. Whether that be from a lack of body confidence, fear of judgment or their periods, our event provided tips and advice to show girls no matter what barrier they may encounter, getting active can be fun and has such important positive benefits.

What did we achieve?

On the day, 1,162 schools watched the live broadcast, and we reached over 40,000 viewers across the country. We’re thrilled to receive such positive responses, feedback, and engaged questions in the room and in the live chat from those who watched on the day.

What's next?

We want to keep the conversation going and continue to raise awareness among teachers and parents on the importance of supporting girls in physical activity and PE, whilst creating a space for girls to feel seen and heard. With Studio You’s range of resources and video lessons for schools and teachers, and working with other sector partners, we hope to achieve this. Here are some of the things you can do to help us with this goal:

  • Register for Studio You and explore our free resources which includes lesson plans, activities, posters, and stickers to help you create a positive and inclusive environment for girls to enjoy physical activity.
