Logo Lift Off

Did you know that from 2022, rockets will be launching into space from UK spaceports for the first time ever? At Hopscotch, we have been supporting The UK Space Agency to celebrate this exciting milestone with a new STEAM-focused competition for kids aged between 4 and 11 years old.

Next year, the UK is set to become the first country in Europe to host small satellite launches, as set out in the National Space Strategy. Satellites have the important mission of taking important measurements and collecting data that is used to help protect our planet from climate change.

We teamed up with the UK Space Agency to launch Logo Lift Off, a new primary school competition where children will have a chance to design a logo that will be launched into space. The competition builds upon the creativity and enthusiasm young children have for space and our planet and educates them on how small satellites can help to monitor and inform solutions to climate change. Incredibly, around half of the diverse types of data needed to accurately monitor the impact of climate change are collected from space. Satellites routinely monitor the polar ice caps and changing sea levels, measure the temperature of the oceans and deserts, and even to count endangered animals such as whales and walrus.

Our supporting lesson plans and activities will help students understand the impact of climate change, whilst providing inspiration for their logo design. Concurrently we hope children will be inspired to think about the different jobs offered by a career in STEAM which will support continuation of science subjects as they get older.

Science Minister George Freeman said:

“2022 will be a historic year for the UK space and satellite industry, with the exciting prospect of the first small satellites launching from British soil. The continued strength of our growing space industry depends on finding and attracting future talent, and this competition is a great way for children to learn about the importance of satellites and to showcase their creativity.”

Regional winners will get a chance to pitch their designs to our panel of high-profile judges – soon to be announced! Finalists may even have the opportunity to attend the first satellite launch from the UK!

We are proud to be involved in this unique opportunity to boost young people’s education on space, climate change and the role small satellites play in protecting the planet.
